About This Location

Great Falls Park on the Virginia side of the Potomac River protects 800 acres of spectacular river gorge, mature forest, and rocky outcrop habitats just 15 miles upstream from Washington DC. The park has recorded over 200 bird species, with the dramatic Potomac gorge creating a unique ecological corridor that channels migrant songbirds and supports rare breeding species.

The mature floodplain forest along the River Trail hosts breeding Cerulean Warblers, Yellow-throated Warblers, and Louisiana Waterthrushes, while Barred Owls nest in the hemlock-shaded ravines. Spring migration is excellent, with warblers concentrated along the cliff-top trails. The rocky river channels attract occasional Bald Eagles and Ospreys, and the diverse plant communities on the Potomac gorge's bedrock terraces support an unusually rich insect fauna that feeds abundant flycatchers and vireos.
