About This Location
Fresh Pond Reservation in Cambridge is a 162-acre urban park centered on a glacial kettle pond that serves as a public water supply reservoir. Despite its urban setting, over 180 species have been recorded here, with the 2.25-mile perimeter path providing easy, flat walking through a surprising diversity of habitats including mature woodland, successional scrub, and lakeshore.
Great Blue Herons nest in a rookery visible from the path, while the open water of the pond attracts diving ducks, grebes, and Belted Kingfishers year-round. The wooded edges and shrubby areas are productive during spring and fall migration, when warblers, thrushes, and sparrows pass through. Winter brings Hooded Mergansers, Bufflehead, and occasionally rare ducks to the unfrozen sections of the pond. The reservation is a beloved local birding spot for its reliable diversity and easy access.
